In this reading it discussed the use of abstract expressionist's art as a way to fight against the soviet Union post World War 2 and during the Cold War. The reading did bring to light a very interesting fact that the abstract art movement did originate the way it did rather than being something that was eventually going to happen. I even went as far as to research this fact and it found many articles on the topic. When discussing the article my group did bring up to interesting fact of why America was using something like art to fight communism and show the world that america's style of government was free, however, communist artist were also creating abstract artwork and were excluded from certain museums that showcased modern art. We found this somewhat hypocritical, but the government saw it necessary for the fight against communism.
While the reading was insightful it did have writing issues such as the jumpy way it was written, which made it difficult to follow the author's main idea at certain points in the essay. The author also tied the way certain artist died with the exploitation of their artwork. Instead of the artists works being something that they created as their love of art, it became a something that they had to repeat and were not able to show a choice in making at certain points, however this is something that in not a definite fact, but really interesting to think about. Overall I enjoyed the reading and it helped to generate many questions about the art movement and its origins.
