Michael Vasquez is an artist who explores the life and the reasons why young children turn to gangs as a replacement for a missing parental figure. The color images he creates showcases the rough but idealized male figure a young boy yearns for when growing up in a single parent household. Through his work, Vasquez also explores a gang as a family with its own set of values and as a ritualistic system with its own right of passage when becoming fully apart of the gang as well as becoming a man. Vasquez's works are insightful, as many never would have understood why someone would turn to a lifestyle typically related to violence. By showcasing these works of his friends he show cases a story that may have never been told and understood with simply words. While this will not stop children and teens from turning to gangs and other actions and groups for support, I feel as though this could help our society if more stories like these were known. We would not simply teach abstinence from something and build another prison, but work harder to give them love and other activities better within their community.

Sandra Chevrier is an artist living in Montreal who utilizes collage and heavy painting to make her figures emerge from the canvas they exist on. Her works goal is to expose the limitations of our world, to show the limitations we put on ourselves, and to allow us to free ourselves from these ranges set on us. Sandra Chevrier explores these concepts in her series "Cages" and "Super Heroes" and the outcomes are amazing. He style is amazing, as in "Cages" the style is loose in the back ground and everywhere else on the body of the figure then face becomes more clear and detailed. In "Super Heroes" the comic book pages become the mask and the clothing of the figure, while the eyes and mouth is left out. This emphasizes the power within the subject. Chevrier's works are nothing but beautiful, amazing, and cool.
Glen Ronald is a Canadian artist whose art style falls between abstraction and realism. His paintings are called chaosmos, meaning in his works he creates a chaos and then he pulls the order (or the cosmos) our of the chaos. His work mostly focus on historical and public figures while also exploring nature through landscapes and portraits of wildlife. With black and white he is able to create strong pieces with a delicate process of layering colors and different strokes to create the bodies of work. I really enjoy the uniqueness of his art and the attention to detail, which lead me to follow him . His portraits and abstract art feature so many elements ranging from hyperrealism to complete abstraction as well as mixing in the appearance of splash painting. Through his artwork, a new and more modern interpretation of abstract realism has been developed, showing another step to merging these two art forms together. Laura Jenkinson is a makeup artist living in London and along with a recent movement of makeup art she has taken her lip stick and made what is called Lip Art. Although her works mostly draw on the use of many cartoons (such as the Looney Toons, Rugrats, Simpsons, etc.) she manipulates her lip motions, the way she positions her face , and uses paper to create the character in a fun way. She also showcases her make-up abilities to turn herself into characters such as Edward scissor hands, as well as using make-up to draw portraits. Even though this is simply a pasttime for her, I enjoy the little characters she creates for their simplicity within the makeup artist world. Even though others are able to create full body art and turn themselves into these intricate creatures, she chose to focus on one small section of her body and make interesting works. Alex Garant is an interesting artist who explores symmetry and creating an image that engages her viewer. Her art work draws from inspiration that spans from early ink prints to modern day images. In later years her artwork had began to focus on women who appeared to have double eyes, however I have seen a growth in her artwork over the past year. In her latest paintings I have began to see a new level of craftsmanship with the exploration of double vision. This technique looks very difficult and it hurts my eyes some times to even look at the painting without moving my eyes constantly around the piece instead of trying to take it all in at once. The appearance of transparency and the overlapping images is something I have seen before in another artist, however Garant shows a lot more detail and intensity in her work which I adore greatly. Alexa Meade is a a fascinating artist who explores the concept of depth and 3D versus 2D in her artwork by painting on top of real people and objects. By applying harsh lines, textured brushstrokes, and using colors as they exist Meade is able to deconstruct a live 3D image into a 2D work of art that tricks the eyes into that that it was simply painted on canvas and not on life. This is a technique which I had never seen before and I may have never discovered it if I had not have gotten on Instagram one day and went to an art promotion web page. The vivid colors which she uses and the contrast she creates is lovely. I also admire the fact that her artwork is somewhat final after she takes the picture because there is no way to create the exact same image, thus making it a one shot thing. A few years ago I found an interesting artist whose works I really enjoyed. Agnes Cecile does artwork in which she uses materials such as watercolors, acrylics, charcoal, and others to create pieces which are really striking to me. As I watched her over the years I saw her growth as well as the emotions in her art work becoming clearer. A majority of her paintings have a calming yet sometimes somber mood to them as others seem to explore the many things that the human mind may experience. While I do not know the true reasons behind her pieces I have always loved her uses of color and style to create such artwork that has the power to evoke emotion. I discovered this photographer through his very interesting photographs taken with a x-ray machine. After finding his website I saw that he also took photos of cities in action, the daily lives of people and other captivating scenes. This use of such a strange instrument to capture the inner workings of an object is unique and very fascinating. It is interesting to see the way things look in the inside. To me these pictures also show a different world to the one we see and makes it even more beautiful. Fabian Oenfer is a photographer and artist born in Switzerland. His art captures images using every day instruments such as sound waves, light and magnetic ferroliquids. His works also features layering many images over each other to create the illusion of a galaxy or a car who's parts are seemingly levitating off of it. I love these images for there use of colors and how using everyday things such as sound, light, and every a sphere and a can of paint to create beautiful pictures and organic shapes. I would love to try some of his methods as they seem like an interesting experiences to see how his process is and I would also like to find out more about his thinking and working processes when he decided to create these amazing images. Roxy Paine is an American contemporary artist who creates works based on the conflict between industry and nature, as well as chaos and control. His artworks features stainless steel trees, replicas of mushrooms and poppies, plants in various states of decay, and large scale machine sculptures. I really liked the steel trees and how he was able to create a machine like feel to it, mixing industry and nature. I also liked how his style of art could go from a creating a replica of something, to a very creative intertwining of machines with nature on the human body. I feel as though this juxtaposition between controlled art and chaotic will help to expand my art style. Anna Garforth is an artist who does a wide variety of artworks using things like moss, reusing paper, and digital illustration and animation to create her works. Her works mostly center around nature however, she also experiments with baking food and making art out of it. She also conveys messages such as taking care of our world and going out and enjoying through her work. I like how she is able to use her surroundings along with her traditional and digital art skills to create such a variety of works. I also enjoy how she incorporates nature into her art by using it in as the work itself, background, or simply using a photo as the objects design. It is a very different art style than what currently in the art world. |
