This week was very progressive. While I did think I was going to be done sculpting my skull, I still have a lot to do next week in order to finish my plan, as well as find some teeth to cast. It will probably be smooth sailing after I get the jaw right to, because after two class period of trying I finally realized I needed WATER to get everything to stick together instead of using the semi-moist clay that began to crumble every time I stuck it on the head piece.
In a recent reading the topic of female artist and their lack of fame seemed to be a promenient pointed that had been brought up in our recent discussion. While reading this article and coming to class I also found it interesting that our predominately female class could only name a few female artist before giving up and searching for a some that we had never heard of. Before reading this art just seemed like what it was, art, and the thought of which gender made it never really mattered to me. I found that if I liked the piece but not I see how much of a fact the artist's role truly plays in the world.
After discussing female artist and the little acknowledgment they are truly given the rule of men came into play. The reading pointed out that many men are the main heads of major art shows, as well as a man the comment“Women don’t paint very well. It’s a fact…As always, the market is right.” by painter George Baselitz. The fact that men are the head of many major art galleries seems to be the big issue that can be pin pointed as a root to the problem of the bias in the art world, however it may not be intentional. We have lived in a world that has made significant changes to the way women were treated in the last one hundred years, which is not nearly enough to change what seems to be normal. These CEO's and business men usually go for what they like or see will bring in the most attention and their instinct may go towards the conventional choice, which is something that is just the normal way of things that no one thinks about until it is pointed out which in turn can lead to a slow turn towards a time where none of these problems exist. Now I know this seems a little jumbled, but what I'm trying to say is there are a lot of professions that show an inequity with males and females in the workforce and with art it is a shame because I feel that the art shows the least acknowledgment towards women, as well as many other artist who were thinking beyond their time, but they are only now getting their true attention, with others reaping the benefits of their hard work. With the comment made by Baselitz, I feel as though he can not have justly said such a thing. When I look at throughout the artist I have studied I cannot pin point an artist and say that their work has failed to be well crafted and has obtained enough popular to be appreciated by me because I feel as though that art put a lot of work into something that is entirely them. No artist is alike so artist shouldn't be put on a scale that says that their art is amazing just by their market value. A few years ago I found an interesting artist whose works I really enjoyed. Agnes Cecile does artwork in which she uses materials such as watercolors, acrylics, charcoal, and others to create pieces which are really striking to me. As I watched her over the years I saw her growth as well as the emotions in her art work becoming clearer. A majority of her paintings have a calming yet sometimes somber mood to them as others seem to explore the many things that the human mind may experience. While I do not know the true reasons behind her pieces I have always loved her uses of color and style to create such artwork that has the power to evoke emotion. In my abstract expressionist painting, I can definitely see that I have pulled some elements from my mono-print while also trying to explore newer color schemes. While I like the green background, I can see how the loose brushstrokes have started to become somewhat of a problem as I layer onto the painting, and it is also hard to find a working color scheme without including blues and pinks. So while I wanted this green color as something new, now I somewhat see why when mono printing I stayed more on the safer side of color scheming and choice different shades of blue which could co along with multiple colors. I also can have used a better layout in the last few steps as it looks like nothing is really falling together which is really messing up the composition that I was going for, however I am enjoy the painting process.
